New Baseline Surface Radiation Network Project Manager
The Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN), which collects and assembles high
quality measurements of surface radiation fluxes, has a new Project Manager. Dr. Christian Lanconelli of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre will assume the role left open by Dr. Chuck Long, whom we thank for his successful tenure and wish well in his retirement.
Dr. Lanconelli's efforts as BSRN Project Manager will include extending the synergy of BSRN with other networks and its role as a reference for modeling studies as well
as calibration and validation activities.
The Knowledge Action Network on Emergent Risks and Extreme Events (RISK KAN) provides an open platform for scientific communities from across science disciplines and engineering working on extreme events, disaster risk reduction, and governance under the umbrella of the Future Earth, IRDR, and WCRP programs, to exchange information, knowledge, and data.
Dates: 26-29 November 2018 Location: Lisboa, Portugal BY INVITATION ONLY The 2018 GEWEX Data and Analysis Panel (GDAP) meeting will be held at the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera (IPMA) in Lisboa, Portugal from 26-29 November 2018. Dr. Isabel Trigo is hosting the meeting. The first three days will discuss the classic GDAP agenda, and the morning of Thursday, 29 November is open to GDAP Panel members only. Dates: February 25 – March 1, 2019 Location: Berlin, Germany Abstract Submission Deadline: 31 October 2018 (Submission will remain open until November 15, but abstracts submitted before the October 31 deadline will be given priority) Both observational and modeling perspectives on understanding clouds and precipitation are welcome, including insights from and advances in field measurements,
remote sensing, numerical simulations, and process studies. Contributions are encouraged in the following five thematic areas, though the scientific sessions will evolve based on the abstracts submitted: - Looking toward global storm-resolving climate simulations
- Insights on clouds and precipitation from recent and planned field studies
- Technical advances
for simulating, computing, and observing clouds and precipitation
- Coupling of aerosols, clouds and/or precipitation to circulation systems or the environment – insights from modeling studies
- Progress in understanding and representing unresolved processes (such as microphysics, turbulence, and radiation), including insights from measurements, machine learning and more fundamental models and
theory
Dates: 25-28 March 2019 Location: Barcelona, Spain Abstract Submission Deadline: 15 December 2018 This workshop is jointly organized by the WCRP Working Group on Coupled Modelling (WGCM) CMIP Panel and the European Commission Horizon 2020 projects PRIMAVERA (PRocess-based climate sIMulation: AdVances in high-resolution modelling and European climate Risk Assessment) and EUCP (EUropean Climate Prediction system). The workshop will focus
on: - Single and multi-model CMIP6 analyses and evaluation that takes advantage of the large suite of CMIP6 experiments
- Efforts to connect model development and analysis to identify Earth system model improvements that help reduce systematic biases and/or increase the realism of models
- Methods for multi-model analysis
- Climate change impacts
Dates: 7-12 April 2019 Location: Vienna, Austria Abstract Submission Deadline: 10 January 2019, 13:00 CET Sessions relevant to GEWEX science are listed below. If you know of or are involved in a session that you’d like to have included, please email us at gewex@gewex.org.

Director of NASA's Earth Science Division
Application Deadline: 30 November 2018
The Director of the Earth Science Division (ESD) reports directly to the SMD Associate Administrator (AA) and provides essential support in planning, presenting, and implementing the $1.9 billion/year Earth Science Program to NASA senior management, the Office of
Management and Budget (OMB), and other Executive Office stakeholders, and Congress. In partnership with the other SMD Directors, the incumbent supports the AA in providing the overall guidance, strategy, advocacy, and budget for NASA's Science Program.
The incumbent will be an active member of the SMD leadership team and will help coordinate and align key functions and activities across all of SMD. Contributions include, but are not limited to, developing
cross-disciplinary research and analysis programs, developing and implementing policies that create high-quality and effectively managed programs across SMD, and continually improving the management of the SMD mission portfolio. The incumbent will be expected to provide feedback throughout all of SMD's efforts to develop the highest quality and most innovative science program for NASA and the nation. For more information and to apply, visit https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/514670000.
Application Deadline: 30 November 2018
Applications are invited for a 34-month research position starting in February 2019 for the climate research group of the National Centre for Meteorological Research (CNRM)
at Météo-France, Toulouse, France, with a focus on very high resolution modeling of the European climate. The final goal of this project is to provide consistent and authoritative climate projections over Europe, combining initialized near-term and long-term projections, general circulation models, and regional climate models. A wide range of methods will be used to quantify and constrain uncertainty, and investigate changes of specific events or indicators. More information on qualifications
and how to apply can be found at https://www.gewex.org/gewex-content/uploads/2018/10/Call_Research_Fellowship_CNRM_EUCPproject_oct2018.pdf.
