The online journal Remote Sensing is currently running a Special Issue entitled "Remote Sensing of Precipitation." This Special Issue will host papers on all aspects of remote
sensing of precipitation, including applications that embrace the use of remote-sensing techniques of precipitation in tackling issues, such as precipitation estimations and retrievals along with their methodologies and corresponding error assessment, precipitation modelling including validation, instrument comparison and calibration, understanding of cloud microphysical properties, precipitation downscaling, precipitation droplet size distribution, assimilation of remotely sensed precipitation
into numerical weather prediction models, measurement of precipitable water vapor, etc.
The submission deadline is 15 August 2018. You may send your manuscript now or up until the deadline. Submitted papers should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. We also encourage authors to send a short abstract or tentative title to the Editorial Office in advance ( remotesensing@mdpi.com or danielle.yao@mdpi.com). For details on the submission process, please see the instructions for authors.
Letter of Intent Deadline: 1 September 2018
The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) is soliciting offers to host an International Project Office (IPO) to coordinate its cryospheric activities from 1 January 2019 onward. The Climate and Cryosphere Core Project (CliC) of WCRP serves as the focal point for climate science related to the cryosphere, its variability and change, and interaction with the
broader climate system. CliC activities have resulted in a wealth of cutting-edge research, valuable data products, and innovative use of models to project changes in the Polar Regions and other frozen areas globally. Past host institutions of the CliC office have consistently benefited from elevated international exposure as well as increased leverage in national and international funding and partnership opportunities. The CliC International Project Office can act as a focus for
cryosphere research in its host institution and country and through its network, infrastructure and expertise, can facilitate international research collaboration.
Prospective host institutions and sponsoring organizations are invited to view and download the full call for hosting the CliC IPO from https://www.wcrp-climate.org/news/wcrp-news/1319-call-for-expressions-of-interest-to-host-the-wcrp-international-project-office-for-the-climate-and-cryosphere. Letters of intent to host the CliC IPO should be sent to Dr. Mike Sparrow ( msparrow@wmo.int) by 1 September 2018.
Congratulations to
Professor Howard Wheater on being awarded the 2018 International Hydrology Prize Dooge Medal, which recognizes those who make fundamental contributions to the science of hydrology. The Dooge Medal was awarded to Howard during a ceremony at the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva in early May, "In recognition of his international leadership in hydrological research of scientific excellence, coupled with its translation into policy and practice and application
worldwide.”
Submission Deadline for Pre-Registrations: 18 June 2018
The ERA-NET Consortium AXIS [Assessment of Cross(X)-sectoral climate Impacts and pathways for Sustainable
transformation] was created to promote cross-boundary, cross-community research with the overall goal to improve coherence, integration and robustness of climate impact research and connect it to societal needs. AXIS aims to overcome boundaries between science communities through promoting inter- or transdisciplinary research projects. AXIS has announced the launch of a Joint Transnational Call for proposals. It will be supported by at least 10 funding organizations from 9 European
countries and co-funded by the European Commission. The call will have an indicative budget of 15–17 Mio. € to support international research projects of a duration of up to 3 years. For more information, please visit the JPI Climate Activities AXIS.
Dates: 13-16 November 2018 Location: Toulouse, France Abstract Submission Deadline: 22 June 2018
The main objective of the workshop is to initiate a new WCRP-wide activity on the Earth’s energy imbalance and to thus strengthen and extend the community on the imbalance through a community-wide discussion on links across all the WCRP Core Projects and relevant
activities. The expected outcome is to identify research goals and opportunities focused on the Earth’s energy imbalance, and synthesize the various aspects across WCRP, through: - Discussion and reporting on how the CONCEPT-HEAT topic could evolve into a WCRP topic, together with research goals and priorities.
- Strengthening future international scientific collaborations with experts concerned with the flow of
energy through the climate system, and its implications for climate variability on multiple time scales.
- Developing plans for future assessments of the Earth Energy Imbalance and its variability with the aim of documenting uncertainties, assessing their implications for prediction, and identifying future observational needs.
- Developing a community paper on the Earth energy imbalance, or equivalent (e.g., a
special issue).

The Hans-Ertel-Centre for Weather Research is hosting the first International Symposium on Regional
Reanalysis from 17 to 19 July 2018 in Bonn, Germany. With reanalysis and in particular reagional reanalysis data sets getting more and more attention, the goal of the symposium is to discuss and promote all aspects of regional reanalyses. This event will hopefully function as a kick-off for a series of recurring conferences or meetings on regional reanalysis in the following
years.
Application Deadline: 8 June 2018 The Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary invites applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Hydrological Modeling. The successful applicant will be based in the Department of Geography, and will focus on the development and application of hydrological and/or hydroclimate models. The successful candidate is expected to have expertise in the hydrological sciences and will establish a strong research program in the areas of water resources, hydrological extremes (e.g. drought/flood), and climate change. This research could be conducted at a variety of scales (regional, continental, global). Tier II CRCs have the potential to achieve international recognition in the next five to ten years and are expected to attract
external funding as well as excellent trainees, students, and future researchers to support research activities. A demonstrated ability to develop and teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses on topics related to the Chair position is required. Interested individuals are encouraged to submit an application online via the ‘Apply Now’ link at the application page. Data Sets
The ECMWF YOPP Analysis and Forecast Data Set, which is provided by ECMWF with
co-funding from the EU Horizon 2020 project APPLICATE, is now available. This data sets (2017 and 2018) builds on the success of the concept of a “virtual field campaign,” developed in the framework of the Year of Tropical Convection (YOTC), and provides analysis and coupled forecast data from the operational ECMWF forecasting system. Furthermore, process tendencies from various physical and
dynamical processes are available for the first 48-hrs of the forecast. Given that global analysis and forecast fields are provided, scientific studies in non-polar regions will also benefit from this data set.
