Deadline: 1 October 2016
WCRP and WWRP have established an International Prize for Model Development, awarded annually for an outstanding contribution to weather
and climate model development by an early- to mid-career researcher. More details on eligibility, required nomination material, and the selection process can be found at http://www.wcrp-climate.org/wmac-activities/ipmd2016.
Nominations of suitable candidates should be forwarded to WCRP ( mrixen@wmo.int) and WWRP ( pruti@wmo.int), and must be received by 1 October 2016.
Deadline: 1 October 2016
WCRP and GCOS have established an International Data Prize, awarded annually to honour achievements in (climate) data product generation, data management, data preservation, data monitoring, and other data relevant activities by an early- to mid-career researcher. Find more information
at http://www.wcrp-climate.org/wdac-activities/idp2016.
Nominations of suitable candidates should be forwarded to WCRP ( mrixen@wmo.int) and GCOS ( gcosjpo@wmo.int), and must be received by 1 October 2016.
Register for the webinar series about NASA soil moisture and evapotranspiration products and how to access and apply them for water resource management. Over the course of five weeks, you'll learn how to monitor and manage water resources with techniques learned in the training. The series will begin with an introduction to satellite missions and useful data sets, moving on to demonstrations of online portals for accessing
data, concluding with specific examples of how you can apply the data and modeled data products. Register in advance at https://arset.gsfc.nasa.gov/water/webinars/apps-et-smap.
The International Soil Modeling Consortium (ISMC) CROSS panel is searching for participants from the GEWEX community. CROSS develops and evaluates interdisciplinary concepts where healthy soil function plays a crucial role through collaboration other with disciplines, bridging
environmental science and socio-cultural approaches. CROSS aims to impact both science and society by innovation through its focus on soil science and its applicability to other science fields. If the CROSS panel and its aims appeal to you and you would like to participate, please email martine.vanderploeg@wur.nl and/or mathieu.javaux@uclouvain.be.
Submission Deadline: 30 September 2016
This special issue will be open to all submissions within its scope. There is an international need to improve the understanding and modelling of mountain snow and ice hydrological processes. This has prompted 40 scientists, operating 23 mountain research catchments around the world, to launch a new GEWEX Hydroclimate Panel Cross-cut Project – INARCH, the International Network for Alpine Research Catchment Hydrology.
This mountain hydrology data publication special issue will compile data from mountain catchments around the world in one central repository to the benefit of global alpine hydrological research. The editors will entertain papers on cold regions catchments in comparative
studies with mountain catchments.
2nd GEWEX INARCH Workshop Dates: 17-19 October 2016 Location: University of
Grenoble, Grenoble, France
This workshop will provide a venue to bring scientists together to explore and discuss specific issues in mountain snow and ice hydrology highlighted after the inaugural INARCH workshop in Kananaskis in October 2015.
The workshop is open to all scientists contributing directly or indirectly to the INARCH GEWEX crosscut project. Early-career scientists (Ph.D. student, post doc) are encouraged to participate. If
you wish to become an INARCH participant, please contact john.pomeroy@usask.ca with an expression of interest and description of what your contribution to the project might be.
Three main topics will be covered by the Workshop: - Atmospheric downscaling for mountain snow and ice hydrology modeling
- Availability and suitability of surface
observations and spatial observations from mountain observatories and discussion of the mountain observations journal special issue
- Climate sensitivity numerical experiments – results from numerical diagnostic experiments using the cryospheric and hydrological response of mountain catchments to various representations of a changing climate
Interested participants need to provide an expression of interest in attending or presenting by sending an email to vincent.vionnet@meteo.fr for planning purposes.
The First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) invite applications for the post of Executive Director of the International CLIVAR (Climate and Ocean - Variability, Predictability, and Change) Project Office, based in Qingdao, China. The post is available from the 1st of October and will
remain open until filled by a suitable candidate. See http://wcrp-climate.org/News-Highlights/2016/Documents/CLIVAR_ED_Further%20details%20final.pdf for further details.
Application Deadline: Priority consideration given to applications submitted by 1 October 2016
The SUNY University at Albany Atmospheric Sciences Research
Center invites applications for a research scientist position in Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) soil moisture data assimilation. The planned weather- and climate-relevant research will involve extensive numerical weather forecast model (WRF) evaluation and code modification to implement satellite data assimilation of NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) soil moisture retrievals. The successful candidate will: - Conduct WRF and NASA Land Information System (LIS)
simulations
- Carry out data analysis and visualization using Python, NCL or similar scripting language
- Design and write creative and innovative peer-reviewed journal articles on soil moisture data assimilation and WRF configuration sensitivity in the context of short-term (9-30 h) weather (incl. wind) predictability over the U.S.
The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is searching for a new Executive Director to be based in Montevideo, Uruguay. As per the Agreement Establishing the IAI, the Executive
Director cannot be a citizen of Uruguay, the host country for the Directorate; however applicants from all other countries are encouraged.
