GEWEX E-News Update - 14 June 2016

Published: Tue, 06/14/16

UPDATED Abstract Submission and Registration Deadline: 30 June 2016
Dates: 28-30 September 2016
Location: CNRS, Gif-sur-Yvette, France

Convened by the Global Land/Atmosphere System Study Panel (GLASS) and the GEWEX Hydroclimatology Panel (GHP), this meeting will focus on representing the human dimension in land-surface models (LSMs). GLASS and GHP, both GEWEX Panels, have launched a cross-cutting initiative that promotes the inclusion of human processes in LSMs and broadens GEWEX’s current consideration of anthropogenic influences. Workshop attendance is limited to 50 participants. We advise those interested in attending to register early; the registration, abstract submission, and financial support deadline has been changed to 30 June 2016.

Application Deadline: 15 August 2016
Date: 21-25 November 2016
Location: Dakar, Senegal

The International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) is organizing a one week training school on predictability over the sub-seasonal to decadal timescales in collaboration with the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the Agence Nationale de l’Aviation Civile ed de Meteorologie (ANACIM). This school will include lectures by leading experts from WCRP’s Working Group on Seasonal to Interannual Prediction (WGSIP) on predictability over the sub-seasonal to decadal timescales, with concrete examples from some of the world’s leading operational centers. Lab-based classes will introduce the participants to the new S2S Project subseasonal and CHFP seasonal forecast databases.

Reviewers Wanted for NASA Earth Surface and Interior Focus Area

The NASA Earth Surface and Interior (ESI) focus area is seeking reviewers and panelists for proposals solicited under the Earth Surface and Interior and Space Geodesy Programs. Peer review is critical to the NASA funding process and serving as a reviewer or a panelist is a great opportunity to gain insights into and have an impact on the ESI program. U.S. and international colleagues are invited to fill out this web-based volunteer reviewer form: http://science.nasa.gov/researchers/volunteer-review-panels/earth-surface-and-interior-and-space-geodesy-programs/.

Abstract Deadline: 15 June 2016
Date: 6-8 September 2016
Location: National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, CO, USA

This Workshop will focus on scientific and technical challenges related to convection-permitting climate modeling (horizontal grid spacing ≤4 km). These challenges include the model setup, observational datasets, evaluation techniques, computational resources, model intercomparisons, and the use of convection-permitting simulations in impact research. The aim of the three-day workshop is to foster collaborations and  synergies to work on this challenging topic as a community. There will be oral and poster sessions, several invited talks on key topics, and  multiple opportunities for discussions and networking.

Senior Research Scientist Positions at the Climate Change Science Institute at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Application Deadline: 1 August 2016

The Climate Change Science Institute (CCSI) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting two senior research scientists. One position is in the Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability (IAV) group and the other is for a data scientist in the Data Integration, Dissemination, and Informatics (DIDI) group. The successful candidate for the IAV position will be a thought leader in the field of IAV research, and will be expected to grow and lead IAV projects and staff that advance the state-of-the art in the research, modeling, and analysis of climate change impacts. The successful candidate for the DIDI position will help solve the “big data” problem associated with studying the climate system and how natural and human systems influence and are impacted by a changing climate. Use the links below for complete information and application materials.

Climate Modeling Jobs at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Application Deadline: Positions open until filled

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is now accepting applications to fill up to four positions in the areas of Climate Model Developer and/or Multi-Physics Climate Code Developer. These positions are part of the Cloud Processes Research Group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, in Livermore, California. The individuals will work to better represent atmospheric processes in the Department of Energy’s Accelerated Climate Model for Energy. Please see the links below for more information about the positions and how to apply:
