Comments on NASA CORE Workshop Report

Comments are solicited on the draft report from the NASA CORE (Challenges and Opportunities in ESI) Workshop, held November 2–3, 2015. The purpose of the CORE Workshop was to revisit the strategic plan for the NASA Earth Surface and Interior (ESI) Focus Area. The strategic plan was set down in the 2002 document Living on a Restless Planet, the report of the Solid Earth Science Working Group (SESWG). For more than a decade, this important document has provided core guidance for ESI program development and scientific rationale for ESI-related NASA missions. The goal of this workshop was to update the long-term science strategy outlined in SESWG.

The draft CORE Workshop report can be retrieved here. The public comment period will end on May 31. Your comments should be e-mailed to Amy Chen (amy.p.chen@nasa.gov).

Abstract Deadline: 15 June 2016
Date: 6-8 September 2016
Location: National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, CO, USA

This Workshop will focus on scientific and technical challenges related to convection-permitting climate modeling (horizontal grid spacing ≤4 km). These challenges include the model setup, observational datasets, evaluation techniques, computational resources, model intercomparisons, and the use of convection-permitting simulations in impact research. The aim of the three-day workshop is to foster collaborations and  synergies to work on this challenging topic as a community. There will be oral and poster sessions, several invited talks on key topics, and  multiple opportunities for discussions and networking.

Date: 28-30 June 2016
Location: Leipzig, Germany

The Soil and Critical Zone communities have been exploring ways to broaden participation in addressing global challenges where soil and subsurface processes (groundwater) play important roles, and GEWEX is a natural partner for fostering interactions between the soil/subsurface and the climate communities. The primary objective of this planning workshop is to work with both the Soil/Groundwater and GEWEX communities to develop a road map for better integration of soil research into climate research and greater interfacing of research on soils, climate, and socio-economics. The workshop will embark on creating an infrastructure for 1) informing climate research communities of relevant soil research areas and their results, and 2) communicating research needs and knowledge gaps concerning land processes in climate and weather modulation to the soil and water communities. Date: 8-11 August 2016
Location: Xining, China

The workshop on Land Surface Multi-spheres Processes of Tibetan Plateau and Their Environmental and Climate Effects Assessment aims to bring together professionals from around the world in different disciplines to exchange ideas and research findings, broadening interdisciplinary collaborations on Tibetan Plateau (TP) scientific research, bridging existing knowledge gaps for international and interdisciplinary collaborations, and assessing the Tibetan environment. This workshop will focus on understanding the TP’s climate and environment (both paleo and contemporary), cryosphere, lithosphere, and terrestrial surface conditions, and the regional and global impact of their interactions with the TP regions and global climate and environment using both observational and modeling approaches.

Abstract Deadline: 31 May 2016

26 November-3 December 2016

The aim of this Conference is to bring together hydrology experts from the international scientific community, and in particular the FRIEND community, to present their work on watershed hydrology of large African rivers and on water resources management problems in these basins related to human activities and climate change, with an expected overview from the other large basins in the world.

Application Deadline: 30 May 2016

The First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) invite applications for the post of Executive Director of the International CLIVAR (Climate and Ocean – Variability, Predictability, and Change) Project Office, based in Qingdao, China.

The goal of CLIVAR is to improve understanding and prediction of ocean-atmosphere interactions and their influence on climate variability and change, to the benefit of society and the environment. CLIVAR is a core project of WCRP. The scope of work will include contributions to the fulfillment of CLIVAR scientific priorities as part of WCRP’s objectives and goals. Further, the Executive Director will be responsible for a range of activities including managing the ICPO, participating in relevant meetings and workshops, promoting CLIVAR objectives, and seeking sources of additional funding.
