GEWEX wants to know: - Are you an Early Career Researcher (ECR)?
- Does your research fall under the umbrella of the proposed Western U.S./Canada RHP’s scope?
- Do you have new ideas or data that the U.S. RHP Committee should know about?
If so, advocate for your research to be included in the new U.S. RHP, now! Submit a 15-minute or shorter recorded presentation to the U.S. RHP ECR video competition. See the full contest description here.
Five winners will receive a 500 USD prize, a spot on an Early Career Scientist committee for the new Regional Hydroclimate Project, and a mention in GEWEX’s quarterly newsletter. Videos should be no longer than 15 minutes and the deadline for getting them to us is 11:59 pm EDT on April 27, 2016. Questions? Email us at gewex@gewex.org.
Registration Deadline: 25 April 2016
The hydrological, biogeophysical, and Earth science communities have come together
to develop a robust effort that addresses the water challenges facing the central western North American continent. This includes regions of the U.S. and Canada, which are particularly affected by climate-related water changes.
This workshop will explore creating a Regional Hydroclimate Project that tackles water availability from different vantage points: high resolution climate modeling, evaluation of climate projections, mountain hydrology, observations, ecosystem science, socioeconomic and political impacts, and the intersection of water, energy, and people.
Workshop objectives
include: - Determining program elements and structure
- Establishing science focus areas and identifying leaders for each
- Confirming a planning committee
- Developing an independent plan or path forward for each focus area
- Identifying the next steps
Participation is limited, and registration closes on 25 April 2016.
Dates: 18-22 July 2016 Location: Met Office, Exeter, UK
The 9th International Cloud Modeling Workshop will be held in Exeter, UK on 18-22 July 2016. Cases involve looking into organized mid-latitude continental deep convection and aerosol impacts, COPE convection over southwest England, an
Agl seeding cloud impact investigation, and VOCALS Aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions. Details on the cases and the registration link are available at http://icmw2016.weebly.com.
Abstract Deadline: 12 April 2016 Dates: 24-27 October 2016 Location: China National Convention Center, Beijing, China
The Global Land Project's 3rd Open Science Meeting 2016 will bring together large
parts of the international research community working on land system issues, showcase the width and scope of ongoing research, help build a community in this highly interdisciplinary field, inspire new research, and facilitate review, theory building, and application of science in practice.
The GEWEX community is invited to submit abstracts in any of the four main themes (Trade Offs and Synergies, the Water-Food-Energy Nexus, an Urbanizing and Telecoupled World, and
Land Governance). One session of special interest is T1 S06, entitled " How is regional climate affected by large (regional or global) scale changes in land uses and cover?" To submit an abstract, first register and then submit.
Abstract Deadline: 15 April 2016 Date: 21-22 September 2016 Location: Manhattan, New York, New York, USA
The objective of this workshop series is to discuss and reconcile methodological advances in the validation
and application of global satellite soil moisture data. The workshop is unique in that it brings together satellite soil moisture users and developers to focus on both the derivation and exploration of soil moisture data from both passive and active microwave satellite missions (SMAP, SMOS, ASCAT, AMSR-2, Sentinel-1, and other legacy missions). The workshop will deal with the following (research) questions: - What is the quality of the current satellite products and what can
we expect in the near future?
- Who is using satellite soil moisture data and for what purpose?
- What are the best practices in validating soil moisture products?
- What are the main limitations of satellite soil moisture data from a user’s perspective
- What is the future of satellite-based soil moisture remote sensing?
Abstract Deadline: 14 April 2016 Date: 1-3 June Location: Budapest, Hungary
Building on a successful first PannEx workshop last November, this meeting will address water and energy cycle issues - such as atmospheric processes, water resources, vegetation-soil-atmosphere
interactions, and related topics - for the Pannonian Basin. PannEx is in its way to becoming a GEWEX Regional Hydroclimate Project (RHP), and has developed five Flagship Questions and three Cross-Cut actions to address. Abstracts related to the workshop objectives are welcome. Registration is free, and the
registration deadline is 15 April 2016.

Application Deadline: 16 May 2016
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is recruiting a postdoctoral scientist to conduct innovative
research in climate modeling regarding mesoscale organized convection and its response to global warming. The selected candidate will work with a team of PNNL scientists on advancing modeling and understanding of mesoscale organized convection. In particular, the candidate will evaluate a non-hydrostatic global variable resolution modeling framework at spatial resolution ranging from about 4km to 50km for its ability to simulate organized convection and related processes. The
successful candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in atmospheric sciences or related fields. Expertise in using data and models to study convection or related processes such as clouds, boundary layer turbulence, and land-atmosphere interactions, as well as experience with modeling and high performance computing, will be considered favorably during the evaluation.
Application Deadline: 30 May 2016
The First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) invite applications for the post of Executive Director of the International CLIVAR (Climate and
Ocean – Variability, Predictability, and Change) Project Office, based in Qingdao, China.
The goal of CLIVAR is to improve understanding and prediction of ocean-atmosphere interactions and their influence on climate variability and change, to the benefit of society and the environment. CLIVAR is a core project of WCRP. The scope of work will include contributions to the fulfillment of CLIVAR scientific priorities as part of WCRP’s objectives and goals. Further, the
Executive Director will be responsible for a range of activities including managing the ICPO, participating in relevant meetings and workshops, promoting CLIVAR objectives, and seeking sources of additional funding.
NASA’s Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) is distributing ASTER Level 1 Precision Terrain Corrected Registered At-Sensor Radiance ( AST_L1T) data products over the entire globe at no charge.
The AST_L1T product provides a quick turn-around of consistent GIS-ready data as a multi-file product. Files in the product include: a HDF-EOS data file, full-resolution composite GeoTIFFs, and associated
metadata files. In addition, each AST_L1T granule contains related products including low-resolution browse, and when applicable, a Quality Assurance (QA) browse and QA text report. More than 2.95 million scenes of archived ASTER data are now available for direct download through the LP DAAC Data Pool and for search and download through NASA’s
Earthdata Search Client and USGS’ GloVis. New scenes will be added as they are acquired and archived. You can learn more about ASTER data and the change in policy here.
