Prof.dr Bert Holtslag, a mainstay of the GEWEX community, retired from his position of professor and chair of Meteorology at Wageningen University last October. In a speech to friends, family, and colleagues, he focused on the dream of comprehending and faithfully modeling atmospheric processes,
how far we've come in the last 40 years, and the challenges that we face going forward. Bert founded the seminal GEWEX Atmospheric Boundary Layer Study (GABLS) to further the study and modeling of atmospheric boundary-layer processes. His farewell address with perspectives on the past and current state of atmospheric research is available at ps://edepot.wur.nl/508092.
