Dates: 3–4 February 2020
Location: London, England
Extreme heavy precipitation is increasing in frequency and intensity, and results from new global sub-daily datasets and high-resolution modeling suggest that precipitation extremes will intensify more than anticipated based upon theoretical considerations. Understanding this process is vital in advancing the theoretical knowledge necessary for a step change in regional prediction from understanding the nature and drivers of precipitation extremes. Join Prof. Hayley Fowler at The Royal
Society's discussion meeting on rainfall extremes.

The Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) at NASA Langley Research Center, in collaboration with the CALIPSO mission team, announces the release of a new CALIPSO lidar level 3 (L3) Global Energy and Water cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Cloud product. This new data product is a reformatted version of CALIPSO’s contribution to the GEWEX cloud assessment of global
cloud datasets from satellites ( https://climserv.ipsl.polytechnique.fr/gewexca/index.html).
In order to be compatible with other publicly-orderable lidar L3 CALIPSO aerosol and cloud products, which are reported as monthly HDF files, this new lidar L3 CALIPSO GEWEX cloud product was created. These files report global distributions of cloud amount and cloud top as averages and histograms on a uniform 2-dimentional (2D) spatial grid. All level 3 parameters are derived from the CALIPSO version 4.x level 2 5 km cloud merged layer products, with a temporal averaging of one month.

Dates: 31 March–2 April 2020
Location: Boulder, CO, USA
Abstract Deadline: 10 January 2020
The fast growth of the field of decadal prediction has led to something of a research and operations gap in the intermediate time scales, which range from more than a few seasons to less than a few years, despite clear evidence of both societal and scientific interest in improved understanding and forecast skill on this multi-year time scale as well. Since year-to-year forecasts likely will have limited skill on average, knowing ahead of time when to have high confidence in the
predicted outcomes is essential; that is, each forecast includes an assessment of its expected skill. Moreover, useful forecasts lie at the intersection of what can be predicted and what needs to be predicted, so applications of predictability research should consider user needs as well. The interaction of the prediction, predictability, and user communities at the outset of setting a multi-year prediction research agenda is fundamental to achieving the goals of this workshop.
